Young Adults in particular while still connected to their family of origin may experience depression while attempting to construct and adult life. Here are two challenges they may face:
1. Isolation versus Intimacy Issues
According to Murstein's, 1970 (as cited in Belsky, 2010) mate selection theory suggest that we go through three phases when working toward commitment. Stimulus phase- We make judgments towards a person based on external characteristics. Value Comparison Phase-We make judgments towards a person based on similar values and interest. Role Phase - the final stage in which committed partners work out their future life together.
When families don't get help to deal properly with their issues of grief and depression it can end up like the scene below.
2. Identity Issues according to Marcia 1987 (as cited in Belsky,2010).
Identity Diffusion-a status in which the person is aimless or feels totally blocked, without any adult life path. Identity Foreclosure-a status in which the person decides on an adult life path without any thought. Moratorium- a status in which the person actively searches out various possibilities to find a truly solid adult life path. Identity Achievement-a status in which the person decides on a definite adult life path after searching out various options.
